Patriot Ledger Endorses O'Leary

The following endorsement appeared in the Patriot Ledger:

The next representative in the 10th congressional district will make decisions that will have a profound impact on the region for years to come.

The 112th Congress will address issues ranging from funding health care reform and military deployment to deciding policy on green energy, education and the fishing industry.

The Democrat most qualified for the job is state Sen. Robert O’Leary of Barnstable and the most qualified Republican is former state treasurer Joseph Malone.

We endorse both in their respective primaries this Tuesday.

Robert O’Leary

In his 10 years as a state legislator and in the last several months on the campaign trail, O’Leary has demonstrated a firm grasp of the details on many issues of prime concern to this district, such as sector-based fishing regulations and education reform, which he spearheaded on Beacon Hill as chairman of the Senate Education Committee.

A professor at Massachusetts Maritime Academy with a doctorate in history, he would bring education expertise to Washington at a time when major changes in national policy are taking place.

O’Leary is also a member of the Senate small-business committee and has shown he understands the importance of that sector in growing the region’s economy.

Both O’Leary and his Democratic opponent, Norfolk County District Attorney William Keating, have strong legislative backgrounds and are keenly aware of the district’s priorities.

While Keating’s service to Norfolk County as a legislator and district attorney has been long and commendable, O’Leary has exhibited a clear, specific and detailed understanding of how those priorities can be best served.
