Cape Cod Times: Health care union endorses O’Leary
A health care union with more than 3,500 members on Cape Cod has endorsed state Sen. Robert O’Leary in the 10th Congressional District Democratic primary.
The 1199 SEIU United Healthcare Workers East made its announcement last week at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.
Union officials applauded O’Leary’s efforts to open state waters to renewable energy projects while protecting maritime jobs, as well as his Senate work on education reform.
There were also two recent endorsements in the Democratic primary for candidates seeking to succeed O’Leary.
Last week, the Massachusetts AFL-CIO announced its endorsement of Democrat Sheila Lyons in the race for the Cape and Islands state Senate seat.
In a recent letter to union members, Robert Haynes, president of the Massachusetts AFL-CIO wrote Lyons’ “dedication to her community has been proven throughout her years as Barnstable County Commissioner, a member of the Human Services Advisory Council and Wellfleet delegate.”
Meanwhile, state Rep. Demetrius Atsalis, D-Hyannisport, announced his support for Dan Wolf, D-Harwich, in the Democratic state Senate primary.
Atsalis said his decision rests on Wolf’s experience creating jobs, protecting the environment and being active in the community for nearly 30 years.
