7 Cape Cod Local Newpapers Endorse O'Leary

Democratic primary for Congress endorsement from The Cape Codder, The Register, Harwich Oracle, Sandwich Broadsider, Falmouth Bulletin, Bourne Courier and The Provincetown Banner newspapers.

There are many people mad as hell at government and they aren’t going to take it anymore. A few of them have decided to run for office and are building a platform on their anger.

While they may be well intentioned, they are short on specifics, action plans and what they can do about their anger beyond shouting it to whomever will listen.

Fortunately, for those of us voters who make up the 10th Congressional District we have a Democratic candidate in Robert O’Leary who has a proven track record of getting things done in the state Legislature, has been a champion of causes important to Cape Cod as its state senator, and has the political fortitude to best represent the needs of the 10th district.

O’Leary has been a vocal and tireless advocate for education, the environment, our beleaguered fishing industry and economic opportunity. He is credited with rewriting legislation that in the end not only sought to boost state support for life science businesses but also marine science such as the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole. State funding allowed the renowned research center to pursue private funding for its work and the result was a multi-million dollar grant from the Howard Hughes Foundation that created jobs and research opportunities.

As a college professor he has been a champion for education, leading the way on many causes including the state’s bullying bill. On the environment, he wrote the Oceans Management Act, the first of its kind in the nation. The act seeks to better manage our water resources so they are protected but at the same time can increase maritime jobs and energy opportunities.

Many of the issues he has confronted, been a leader on and advocate for on the Cape are similar to ones facing the South Shore.

The previous representatives from this district – Democrats Gerry Studds and William Delahunt – earned a reputation for their constituent service and responding to the needs of the people. As a state senator, O’Leary has also received high marks for being in close touch with the people, organizations and businesses he represents.

We expect nothing less from him if he is privileged enough to serve as the United States congressman representing Quincy to Provincetown.
